A Smoother Commute Ahead for Dar es Salaam as BRT Expands
Tanzania is laying the groundwork for a calmer daily commute along Nelson Mandela Road, clearing the path for the next phase of its rapid bus network.
Getting around a booming metropolis like Dar es Salaam can often feel like an exercise in patience. Between heavy cargo traffic near the port and the everyday rush of city life, the daily commute carries plenty of noise and friction. Now, transportation authorities are taking key steps to ease that journey along one of the city's vital arteries.
Preparing the Way on Nelson Mandela Road
The Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) is actively verifying compensation records for property owners along Nelson Mandela Road. This review is a necessary milestone ahead of Phase 5 of the Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The planned corridor will stretch from the Kijazi Junction at Ubungo down to Kurasini and the port, aiming to unlock bottlenecks that have long slowed down drivers and transit riders alike.
Alongside paperwork verification, teams have been clearing unauthorized stalls, billboards, and long-parked cargo trucks from public road reserves. While the agency has not yet selected a primary contractor or shared total payout figures, clearing the corridor ensures construction can begin without unexpected delays once tenders are awarded. At the same time, road crews are repainting faded zebra crossings across neighborhoods like Ununio and Kijitonyama to make everyday walking safer.
Why This Matters for Daily Calm
Our daily travel environments deeply shape our mental space. When streets are choked with idling engines and unpredictable delays, stress levels naturally spike before the workday even begins. Expanding dedicated transit lanes does more than speed up buses—it softens city noise, reduces gridlock, and gives commuters a bit more predictable, tranquil breathing room in their daily routine.
