Caring for the Coast: A Community Effort at Coco Beach
Volunteers gathered along Dar es Salaam's Coco Beach to clear litter and refresh the shoreline, proving that small, collective care makes a lasting difference.
There is something deeply restorative about the ocean shore. The steady rhythm of the waves, the open horizon, and the fresh breeze make it a natural place to pause and clear our minds. Recently, volunteers gathered at Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam to return that care to the shoreline itself.
Organized under the theme “One Purpose, One Community,” the clean-up was part of Global Ismaili CIVIC Day. Members of Ismaili CIVIC Tanzania joined forces with the Aga Khan Development Network, the Aga Khan Foundation, and local NGO Africraft to pick up debris, with plans to turn the collected waste into upcycled, usable items rather than leaving it in landfills.
Small habits, lasting change
As organizers noted, genuine environmental stewardship is rarely about one-off gestures; it thrives on ongoing, mindful habits. Since launching in 2021, the global civic initiative has seen more than 250,000 volunteers engage in over 5,500 activities across the world, planting over 4.5 million trees and collecting more than 213,000 kilograms of waste.
Locally, community leaders explained that this mindset extends far beyond beach days. The community has introduced bans on single-use plastics, is transitioning toward solar energy, and is reducing air conditioning usage in communal buildings—all as part of an effort to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Why this matters
Our outer surroundings deeply shape our inner peace. When public spaces like beaches are kept clean and cared for, they remain welcoming sanctuaries where we can walk, listen to the water, and step away from the bustle of daily life. Caring for our shared spaces is one of the simplest ways we cultivate calm for both ourselves and our neighbors.
