Coventry's Impact Steel Band Heads to London for Milestone Celebration

Get ready for some truly joyful sounds! Coventry's very own Impact Steel Band is heading to London's prestigious Southbank Centre this Sunday to be part of a wonderful celebration. They've been selected to mark 75 incredible years of steel pan music flourishing here in the UK. This special performance is part of the 'Steel Scenes' festival, which also happily coincides with the Southbank Centre's own 75th birthday.

It's quite an honor for the 10 to 12 musicians in Impact Steel Band! Their manager, Fareed Siddiqui, shared that out of 15 bands performing over the two-day event, only three were invited from outside of London. "To be representing central England is a huge honour for us," he said. They've certainly earned their spot, having impressed organizers with their energetic social media presence showcasing their tours and gigs. Even their journey to London sounds like fun, with a minibus and a 'very long transit bus' for all their gear – promising a good time on the M1!

The Heart of Steel Pan

Fareed, who is also the band's musical director, found his passion for steel pan as a child after trying other instruments like the violin and flute. He loves how inclusive it is. "The main thing I love about it, it's an ensemble, it's a group activity so everybody can get involved," he explained. There’s something truly special about the shared experience of creating music, and it really shines through in their performances. "It's a great vibe... it brings a lot of joy and smile to people when they hear it."

In a lovely tribute to the instrument's journey, Fareed's 13-year-old son has even composed a special piece for the Southbank performance. This new composition will commemorate the very first steel band performance in the UK, celebrating the legacy passed down through generations. Fareed proudly mentioned, "It's great to show and to give honour to the first generation of people that came over there to perform, that [with] the next generation... steel pan is very much looked after."
