Diana Chando: A Voice for Youth, Shaping Africa's Future
Meet Diana Chando, a remarkable young leader from Tanzania who's making sure young voices are heard where decisions are made. Her journey is a beautiful testament to determination and the power of pursuing your true calling.
Every so often, someone comes along who doesn't just wait for opportunities but actively creates them, shaping the world around them. Diana Chando is one such inspiring individual. For her, empowering young people isn't about simply giving them a platform to speak; it's about making sure they're right there at the table, helping to shape the decisions that will define their future.
Hailing from Tanzania's Njombe Region, Diana, the youngest of three, shares that her path has been lovingly guided by her family's unwavering support, along with her own deep well of resilience and determination. What started as a childhood fascination with leadership and diplomacy has blossomed into a career where she beautifully connects the hopes and dreams of young people with important policy discussions across Africa and beyond.
A Passion for Purpose, Not Positions
Today, Diana serves as a Foreign Service Officer, contributing to vital diplomatic efforts and regional partnerships. Through both her professional role and her youth leadership work, she consistently champions the idea of meaningful youth involvement in discussions about peace, good governance, and development throughout the continent. For Diana, leadership has never been about a title or a position; it's always been about opening doors for others, influencing policies, and ensuring that the perspectives of young people genuinely reach the ears of decision-makers.
Her journey wasn't without its detours. After starting her higher education in the United States, she bravely realized it wasn't the right fit for her true passion. With courage, she shifted gears, eventually pursuing International Relations and Law in London. These academic years were filled with active participation in university events and global forums, which opened her eyes to how young people can truly make a difference globally. Key experiences like specialized training in peace and security in Geneva and working with organizations like the UN Office in Geneva and ACCORD in South Africa further deepened her understanding of international diplomacy and peacebuilding. She also volunteered extensively, seeing every chance to serve as an opportunity to grow, build connections, and prepare for bigger responsibilities.
Answering the Call for Continental Change
After completing her studies and earning a Master's in Climate Change and Sustainable Development back home, a pivotal moment arrived: an announcement for the African Union Youth Ambassador position. Despite feeling she might not tick every box, Diana took a leap of faith and applied. Her mother's encouragement to "be herself" during the interview proved invaluable. Diana's genuine passion for youth development, diplomacy, and cultural exchange shone through, leading to her selection to represent East African youth at the African Union – a truly joyous milestone.
In this significant role, she became a bridge between young people and policymakers, advocating for crucial issues like employment, entrepreneurship, girls' education, women's empowerment, and youth participation in governance. She traveled across Africa, engaging with leaders and training young people on positive community involvement and peaceful electoral participation. Her dedication earned trust and opened more doors. Even after her AU assignment concluded in 2024, Diana continues her vital work, serving on boards for organizations like the Africa Youth Forum International (AYFI) and the African Leadership Initiative for Impact, fostering youth leadership and cross-border cooperation.
Why This Matters
Diana's story is a beautiful reminder that our voices matter, especially when we speak up for others. For those of us who value calm, thoughtful engagement and want to contribute to a better world, her journey highlights the quiet power of determination, the impact of genuine connection, and the importance of ensuring everyone has a seat at the table. It shows how one person's consistent dedication can create ripple effects that truly change lives and futures, encouraging us all to listen more closely and participate more meaningfully in our own communities and beyond.
