Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure in Uganda, has been transferred back to Luzira Prison from Mulago National Referral Hospital. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, was initially hospitalized after collapsing in court on July 29th during his treason trial.
His family has expressed deep concern, stating that he was still quite weak and struggled with walking and speaking clearly when he was returned to prison. According to The Monitor, his wife, Winnie Byanyima, shared that doctors were worried about his condition. She also mentioned that prison officials had previously acknowledged that Luzira Prison was not equipped to provide the specific medical care Besigye required.
Conflicting Reports on Besigye's Condition
Byanyima noted that the decision to return him to prison followed a visit to the hospital by Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi. However, after his visit, Baryomunsi publicly stated that Besigye was improving and wished him a swift recovery. This statement directly contradicts the family's claims and those of his party, the People's Front for Freedom (PFF), which has been advocating for his release and transfer abroad for specialized medical treatment.
Besigye is currently being held on charges of treason and failing to report a treasonous plot, alongside two others. The government alleges he conspired to overthrow the government by force between 2023 and November 2024. His case was moved to the High Court after the Supreme Court ruled that civilians should not be tried in military courts, where his case was originally being heard.
