Chasing Dreams in Dar es Salaam

Hussein Azenga, a young boxer from Chorila Boxing, embodies a true fighting spirit, both inside and outside the ring. Born in Morogoro, Hussein moved to Dar es Salaam in 2017 with big hopes for a better life. He started by working at Mabibo market, but the challenges were so tough that he returned home after a year. Yet, his determination brought him back to Dar es Salaam, ready to carve out his own path.

It was in 2022, during his second stint in the bustling city, that Hussein truly discovered his passion for boxing. He was deeply inspired by fellow boxer Twaha Kiduku, particularly by the incredible energy and support Kiduku received from fans. This sparked a dream in Hussein: to one day earn that same admiration through his own talent and dedication in the sport.

The Bodaboda Boxer

Hussein is a family man, with a wife and a child who depend on him. He openly shares that boxing alone isn't enough to make ends meet, so he takes on another important role: a bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) driver. This means he often wears two hats – one as a dedicated boxer, and another as a hardworking driver.

“When I wake up, I drive my bodaboda because I need to live and support my family,” Hussein explains. “But when it's time for training, I park my motorcycle and head to the gym. I have to fight on both fronts.” This daily hustle reinforces his belief that success isn't just about what happens in the ring; it’s also about the daily grind to provide for his loved ones.

Currently, Hussein holds a 1.5-star ranking, a slight drop from his previous 2 stars because he hasn’t had many fights recently. His last match was in January. He's eager to get back into the ring to climb the ranks once more.

Memorable Fights and Future Hopes

One fight that stands out in Hussein’s memory is his match against Adam Lazaro in Bagamoyo. He received short notice for the fight, which meant he had to ride his bodaboda all the way from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo for the weigh-in, then back, and finally return for the fight itself. Despite the rushed preparations and long journey, Hussein won the 8-round bout by KO in the fourth round. His most recent fight was against Juma Saidi, which he also won by KO in the second round.

Like many aspiring boxers, Hussein faces the challenge of finding sponsors. He believes that with dedicated support, he could focus more on his training and compete more frequently, without the constant pressure of juggling work and sport. He notes that sometimes, a boxer's success can be influenced by the backing they receive, and he hopes to find that kind of support to get the opportunities he deserves.

Despite these hurdles, Hussein’s vision for the future is clear. Within the next ten years, he dreams of becoming a champion, holding various African belts, and following in the footsteps of boxing legends like Twaha Kiduku, Hassan Mwakinyo, and Mfaume Mfaume. His ultimate goal is to represent Tanzania on the international stage and become a name recognized globally.
