Old Pottery Factory in Stoke Gets a Fresh Start with Padel and Music

Good news for Stoke-on-Trent! A historic pottery factory, once a cornerstone of the community, is getting a new lease on life. Developers are pouring heart and soul into turning the former Spode site in the town center into a vibrant spot for everyone to enjoy.

Tim Heatley, from Capital and Centric, shared his vision for creating more reasons for people to visit. Imagine a place where you can play a round of padel, catch a live music show, or even find new office space for creative minds. This beautiful, Grade II listed factory has already started its transformation into a cultural hub, with a theater and artist studios already calling it home, alongside a hotel and event space.

Bringing the Community Together

One of the exciting additions will be padel courts. Tim believes that offering facilities for this fast-growing sport will draw families in. “It creates activity throughout the day,” he explained, picturing people playing early in the morning and families enjoying their weekends there. Plus, new food and drink spots are planned, making the most of these gorgeous, historic buildings by giving them a fresh purpose.

The China Halls within the factory are set to house creative industries and provide space for existing tenants to grow. They'll also feature a cultural venue for exhibitions, events, music, and art. This builds on the success of groups like Claybody Theatre, who recently received a grant to enhance their space, known as The Dipping House.

A New Chapter for Spode

Conrad Nelson, the artistic director for Claybody Theatre, expressed his excitement, noting the incredible transformation over the last decade. He feels a real “momentum” building with a lovely mix of digital industries, hospitality, arts, and culture. It’s this rich blend, he says, that makes it truly special to be part of Spode’s journey back to life.

This regeneration is part of a larger effort by Capital and Centric, who are also working on other projects in North Staffordshire. Their goal is always to add space, restore these incredible heritage buildings, and breathe new life into them for future generations.
