Remembering Sadru Visram: A Life of Service and Compassion

A Life Rooted in Purpose

Sadru Visram, who passed away at 81, was truly a remarkable individual. Known for his kind heart, he was a guiding light in social housing, a devoted family man, and a pillar of his Ismaili Muslim community. He generously gave his time, serving as a school governor, treasurer for Age Concern Newham, and a member of the Aga Khan Economic Planning Board. His deep faith was a constant in his life, shaping his compassionate approach to everything he did.

Sadru’s early life began in Zanzibar, East Africa, as the eldest of three brothers. His mother, Nurbanu, believed deeply in education, waking her sons early to study while she worked. After a revolution in 1964, his family moved to Tanzania. Though he initially dreamed of being an engineer, Sadru found his calling in accountancy, a path that led him to the UK in 1969 with a spirit of ambition and readiness to work hard.

Building a Better Future, One Home at a Time

His career truly blossomed in 1973 when he joined KPMG, quickly rising through the ranks. That same year, he married Teresa Warne, a librarian he met in London. But it was his 20-year tenure at London & Quadrant Housing Trust (L&Q) starting in 1981 that truly showcased his pioneering spirit. As group finance director, he guided L&Q through incredible growth, expanding their homes from 10,000 to 35,000 and boosting turnover significantly.

During a time when housing associations relied heavily on grants, Sadru innovatively opened capital markets to the sector, transforming how affordable housing could be funded. His groundbreaking contributions were recognized with an OBE in 2005. Even after L&Q, he continued to serve as a consultant and a founding board member of Asra Greater London Housing Association, further cementing his legacy. In a beautiful tribute, a building in north-west London was named Visram House in his honor.

Beyond his professional life, Sadru found joy in simple pleasures like playing badminton, bridge, and practicing yoga. He had a special love for Bollywood music and possessed a warm, engaging personality that made friends easily. He leaves behind his beloved wife Teresa, their children Farah, Toby, and Anisa, four grandchildren, and his brothers Azad and Shokat.
