Tom Bailey, the beloved voice behind the Thompson Twins, is getting ready to hit the road again for some UK tour dates, more than four decades after the band first captivated audiences. He'll be performing at Dreamland in Margate alongside fellow 80s legends OMD, and has additional shows planned for Brighton and Guildford in September. For Bailey, one of the most rewarding parts of performing is hearing the crowd sing along. "There's kind of an emotional warmth as a payoff that you never expect. That's just a great feeling," he shared, highlighting the special bond music creates between artist and audience.

A Star-Studded Live Aid Moment

The Thompson Twins were not just big in the UK; they soared to success in the US too, even gracing the stage at the legendary Live Aid concert in Philadelphia in 1985. Bailey fondly recalled how their performance came together. Working on an album in New York with Nile Rodgers, they were asked to participate, and without a band ready, they pulled together David Letterman's house band, with some unexpected guest appearances from stars like Madonna and Steve Stevens.

It was a whirlwind, hastily assembled supergroup, as Bailey remembers it, with only one quick rehearsal before they went on. He playfully noted that he and Madonna essentially traded services, singing on each other's sets. And for the post-show celebrations? Not quite the rock-and-roll extravagance one might imagine, but a rather charming game of Scrabble in a hotel room!
