Choosing a Kilimanjaro route without regretting it

Almost every failed summit comes down to one thing: not enough time on the mountain. Route scenery matters, but days matter more.

Machame in seven days is the sweet spot for most fit hikers — scenic, sociable, with a climb-high-sleep-low profile built in.

Lemosho in eight days has the best acclimatisation curve and the quietest first two days. If your budget stretches, take it.

Marangu, the 'Coca-Cola route', is the only one with huts. It's also the shortest and has the lowest success rate. Avoid the five-day version.

Rongai approaches from the dry north side and is the best bet in the wetter months. Fewer people, less dramatic scenery.

Whatever you choose, walk pole pole — slowly. Your guide will say it a hundred times because it works.
